SCIE ARMA History

The year was 1985 when a few members of the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of ARMA organized a group of twenty-six professionals to form a local chapter in Southern California’s Inland Empire. Charter members were employed by six cities, four banking institutions, two non-profit organizations, five private businesses, one county and joined by two consultants. Ron Harrington of Sunkist Growers led efforts serving as the first chapter president. ARMA International received the charter that requested the name California Inland Empire Chapter. Interestingly, within ARMA International there already existed an Inland Empire Chapter from another US state. Association leadership assigned the name Upland Inland Empire Chapter seeing Upland on the envelope postmark. The little chapter with the unusual name was established within what was then known as Region VI (later to be renamed the Pacific Region) comprising chapters from Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah.

UIEC ARMA grew steadily featuring monthly educational and networking meetings. Partnering several times with the Riverside County Clerk-Recorder’s Office and/or the Southern California City Clerks Association, UIEC sponsored significant one day events featuring educational sessions and technology exhibits.   ARMA International has recognized the chapter several times, beginning with Small Chapter of the Year in 1992. Reaching out into the community, the chapter conducted special Records and Information Management projects for the Youth Service Center of Riverside and Ronald McDonald House in Loma Linda, as well as supporting various assistance programs during the holiday season.   Over the years the chapter’s program included events to celebrate National Records and Information Management Week/Month, as well as tenth, fifteenth, twenty-fifth, and thirtieth chapter anniversaries. Chapter members have not only benefited from excellent educational and networking opportunities, but have enjoyed camaraderie through team efforts, special projects, recognitions, holiday gatherings and silent auctions.

In 2007, UIEC ARMA hosted the annual chapter leadership conference within the Pacific Region at the historic Mission Inn which has served as the venue for special chapter events many times. Though the chapter earned a solid reputation for quality programs and honors under the name UIEC, the chapter formally renamed to align with its location and membership base to the Southern California Inland Empire Chapter of ARMA International often abbreviated SCIE ARMA.

Several members have made significant contributions to the evolution of Records and Information Management through speaking/educational efforts, special initiatives and distinguished service within ARMA International, as well as within their organizations. The chapter continues its efforts to address current technologies and issues, provide quality education, foster networking, promote standards, share best practices, and provide leadership and involvement opportunities supporting the vision of ARMA International.
